this website is awesome, I found it on Facebook. I have been scrapbooking for about 6 years now and absolutely love it. Im not all that great at it, but I still do it because I love pictures and perserving memories. Speaking of which, it's time to start a book for my dogs, Leia and Bentley. Everyone, have fun scrapping and post your pages.

There are lots of ways to get started. I would suggest first trying to see if there is anyone in your family that can fill in some of the blanks about who the people in the photos are. This will help you later when you put your pages together. It will allow you to "journal" about who they are. Journaling is just writing a little blurb on your page about what is going on in those photos or who is in those photos. I do not know too much about doing personal heritage research. Maybe you could start a post in the beginner scrapbookers forum here regarding that. There may be some other people on here with lots of experience in that!

Scrapbooks can be simple or really detailed. It all depends on what you like best. I always say there are no mistakes in scrapbooking because it is all about what you think looks good. My early pages are very simple. My brother's girlfriend and I were looking through them recently. She is a new scrapper too and I was trying to show her how when I started out my pages look a lot different than they do now. My mother in law pointed out to me once that this is a good thing because it shows how far I have come!

In order to get my brothers gf started (God I cant wait until they get married one day so I can write sister in law instead lol) for Christmas I bought her a scrapbook kit, which you can find at most craft stores. It had the album in it along with some paper and embellishments. I think this is a good way to start off. You could also purchase a scrapbooking magazine, which I did for her as well. They often have instructions on how to make the pages they show, including a supply list!

Also, stay tuned here for ideas and tips. Looking at the gallery is a great way to be inspired. I do it a lot. Sometimes when I am stuck I look at other people's work because other scrappys are always so creative and adding neat things to their pages! Dont be afraid to use other people's ideas for things. That is why we share!

I hope I helped a little!

Brenda, The same thing happened when my grandmother died. We took the pictures to family reunions to see if anyone could help us. We did have some success but some will just be mysteries forever. Jodi

Brenda,

There is so many different ways to sort your pictures, I think that is the beginning of the scrapbooking process. In the beginning, everyone did their picture in date order, like scrapbooking your child, they would start from birth to present day. I love to do things a little different. You have to decide how you want your books before you get started.
example: I have a Halloween book, which starts from my sons first halloween until the present day, I do the same for the other holidays. I have a book of just zoo pictures,
everytime we go to the zoo I add my favorite pictures to that book. Some of my favorite books are Birthday books, everyone in my family has their own birthday book, 1st
birthday to present day, also I love my Family Night book, we had a family Wii bowling night (which I had to scrap). I take so many pictures, I started making dvd shows,
example, at xmas I took 300 pictures, I put all 300 into a show on dvd, made copies for my sons to have, then I pick the best and favorite to scrap. I had to do this with my
sons baby pictures, etc. I just had so many, this way I'll always have them on dvd, and I won't have a 1,000 albums of just o.k. pictures. I love scrapbooking, and I love taking pictures, but I've learned how much the go hand in hand. Close up pictures are the best, you can tell who the person is, in my old pictures, not so much, of course, camera choices have
really changed since then. What I've learned over many years, really think about your pictures, getting some really good close-ups when shooting that birthday party and that
there are many ways to scrapbook, the sky is the limit, oh yes, journal your pages and book (I feel is the most important part of the book) write things to that special person that tells how you feel, etc. good luck and most important of all have fun.

Hi Brenda, first I'm sorry you have lost your Mother. But what a treasure to have gotten all her photos, which is your heritage! If I may suggest, I would get a few boxes and set them on the table. The begin by putting all photos that your Mother is in in one box. In another box you could place all the unknowns. Of course as you begin going through these, you may find notes on the backs telling you who's who, so keep an eye out! You may end up with a whole lot of boxes as you do this, but what a fun project for you!

Now is it possible that there are other family members who may be able to identify some of these people? You may want to take all the photos to a place like Costco, where they will scan and put them all onto DVD's for you. I recommend this because it gives you a hard copy for safe keeping, but also because there are so many wonderful digital projects on the computer you can do with this. I do photo restoration, so everything is on computer. Then as I am working on projects, I compile copies of my originals into one folder, restore them, then print.

Back to your delima. Once you begin working on pages, you might find that you have a lot of left over photos that you would like to include, even if you don't know who they are. You can purchase clear plastic 12 X 12 sleeves that hold about 12 photos. Simply place photos inside and add sleeves to your albums.

I hope this in some way helps you as you take on the project. Remember, scrapbooking is all about having fun! There are no rules, except that there are no rules! And post often, letting everyone know how you are doing. With so much experience here, you are bound to find just what you need, simply by asking!

This is a monthly contest

Is the winner announced each month? Also, is there someplace that posts your "score" or do we keep track of that ourselves? My scanner is not 12x12 and most of my layouts are. Is there a problem with taking a picture of the layout and then posting it?

The winner will be announced each month (within the first week of each month)
We are working on a way to view your points in a real-time way and that should be ready sometime in the near future :D

Taking photos is perfectly fine! That is what I do. My scanner also cannot scan 12x12. I have scanned some 8x8 but I only make that size for my cousin's scrapbook I make yearly Which I have considered upgrading to 12x12 now that he is over 2 years old and this year he will be getting it for his 3rd bday. So photos are great too!!!
